Soooo, I have always liked drawing Jack Sparrow... He's a character to draw, and it's always really fun.
Plus, going back and looking at the progression in the past few drawings of him compared to this one is kinda fun too. :P

I'm very pleased with this drawing.
It actually kind of shocked me how nice it turned out. Haha.
Anyways, I was going to use a different reference photo in the beginning, but I changed my mind at the last minute!

I used regular paper, no fancy art paper for this one.
HB, B, 2B 6B and 8B pencils.
and of course an eraser, pencil sharpener and a blending stump.

I worked a really long time on this, and lost sleep. Haha.
Yeah, I was motivated so I just had to get it done. :D
The thumbnail looks too much like a photograph, it kinda creeps me out. Full view please.

Anyways, enough babbling. :D

I think you chose a very good reference picture that reflects his wittiness, and succeeded in recreating his facial expressions, though this is only one of them. The contrast makes it stand out, and frames his face nicely. I love the eyes - they look very realistic and you're kind of wondering what he's about to say. The skin is nicely shaded, and the paper texture and strokes add up to a nice skin texture. His hair can't have been easy to draw, but you did very well on it, especially at the far left.

One thing I can recommend trying is making his facial hair blend in with the skin slightly more. I'm not sure exactly how to put this to make it understandable, actually... Erasing the top parts of each strand to 50% or so would probably make it look more natural.

As for originality, it is impossible to use a reference picture and at the same time be original. When you do use a reference picture this way, though, it makes the question of whether the drawing is original or not irrelevant.

Overall, it is a great drawing, and you did a good job on making it.
